Tips from Distance Ed

Phone: x7812

Have you ever had to update something in a course in ANGEL? If you need to change a piece of ANGEL content, you might have to go change it in each course. To save that clicking time, instructors can use their personal learning object repositories. Items updated in repositories automatically update in each course area linked.

The attached short tutorial outlines the procedure for using learning object repositories. Repositories can also be used to store anything that you might want to use again after you delete the courses from each semester.

When giving directions in ANGEL, do you ever want to refer students to other documents in the course? It's helpful to give reminders to students, but to review the material in the reminder, a student will have to hunt through the course, leaving the current activity. One solution is to link to content within the course. The attached short tutorial covers linking to material within a course.

BONUS: Linking within a course improves accessibility and can decrease usage of storage space.

FRESH- New thinking about what we're eating

Submitted By tkoronkiewicz@mchenry.edu  11/17/2009 8:38:27 AM

Phone: x8772

This Wednesday, November 18 at 6pm in B166-167, Down To Earth is hosting a film, “FRESH: New thinking about what your eating."

Fresh profiles the farmers, thinkers, and business people across the nation who are at the forefront of re-inventing food production in America. With a strong commitment to sustainability, they are changing how farms are run, how the land is cared for, and how food is distributed. Their success demonstrates that a new paradigm based on sustainable practices can be profitable and a model for our food system, if people choose to support it.

This is a free event open to employees, students and the community!

Selected Works: Spotlight on American Writers

The Portrait in Print: Spotlight on American Writers • Poets • Playwrights • Novelists • Essayists • Journalists • Selected Works from the Portrait in Print Collection GALLERY ONE • November 13, 2009 – January 5, 2010

This exhibit spotlights American writers included in the Portrait in Print Collection, a collection of over 250 fine art prints permanently exhibited in the MCC Library. MCC was awarded a 2009 American Heritage Preservation Grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) that provided funding for continued long-term preservation efforts for the collection. This grant program is an important part of the IMLS program, “Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action”, a multi-year, multi-faceted initiative to protect national treasures. Thanks to the grant, the prints will be further preserved and protected for future generations. IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The mission of IMLS is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.

Ultra-Violet (UV) emissions from both fluorescent and natural light as well as adverse environmental conditions cause deterioration and distortion of works on paper such as the prints in the collection. Funds from the grant were used to purchase UV spectrum light filters for the fluorescent fixtures in the library and data loggers to monitor and document temperature and humidity fluctuations in the library’s climate. The installation of the filters and data loggers constitutes one of many steps toward implementation of a long-range preservation strategy to protect and preserve this outstanding collection.

United Way Spelling Bee and Auction Results

Submitted By kplinske@mchenry.edu  11/21/2008 8:51:50 AM

Phone: 8694

After intense competition between the faculty, staff, administrator, and student teams on Tuesday, Geary Smith was crowned "King Bee" at MCC's 4th Annual United Way Spelling Bee. Competitors breezed through words like "chauffeur," "brouhaha," "isosceles," and "bioluminescent," and Geary won the Bee by spelling "Fahrenheit" correctly. Congrats, Geary!

A United Way auction followed which featured fabulous items donated by MCC employees, including award-winning honey, a world-famous cheesecake, and a spectacular gingerbread house. And, because of the generosity of MCC employees, many more items were donated than could be auctioned on Tuesday, so a second auction will be held in December.

Overall, the Spelling Bee and Auction on Tuesday raised more than $500 for the United Way of McHenry County. Thank you MCC employees and students!!

However, those families hit most hard are those of our needy in our McHenry County area. The Crystal Lake Jaycees are helping out with their annual Share-A-Christmas Project.

The project is well received by all who participate and greatly appreciated by the people provided for. Last year many of you were able to help out. Please continue with your generosity and help a family in need this Holiday season. Believe me a little bit will go a long way. Happy Holidays and may your Blessings Abound this Holiday Season.

Health and Wellness

Elaine's Health Corner

Submitted By ewhalen@mchenry.edu  11/25/2008 9:17:13 AM

Phone:

Health tip for the week: Did you know that microwaving foods in plastic containers is not a good idea! While microwave ovens are a great convenience, you have to be aware of potential dangers. Do not heat foods in plastic containers or covered by plastic wrap: microwaving can drive plastic molecules into your food. Use only glass or ceramic containers and cover foods with waxed paper or a paper towel.

Mythbuster of the week: Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Recently, a study was published in the December 2007 British Medical Journal--the researchers could find no clinical evidence to support this notion. However, they did find an article from the November 2002 American Journal of Physiology that documented the lack of evidence behind this popular recommendation. You do need to be well hydrated, but research suggests that the liquids most people drink daily - juice, milk, and decaffeinated beverages - will also do the trick. Your best bets are purified water, diluted fruit juice, tea, and sparkling water flavored with fruit juice. Do try to drink as much water as you can, just don't force it!

Stay tuned for next week's Tip and Myth! If you have any questions about nutrition and/or wellness, send me an email. Maybe it will be the next health tip!

Great way to help military personnel if you can

Submitted By jlefevre@mchenry.edu  11/12/2008 10:38:18 AM

Phone: x8562

I just found out about this program to provide foster homes to the pets of military personnel while they are deployed on active duty. I think it is just a wonderful idea, and it would be one less thing for our service members to worry about while they are deployed overseas. It would also help avoid a repeat of situations like this one: http://www.king5.com/topstories/stories/NW_052108WAB_soldier_horse_slaughter_KC.1866d2a6.html

From their website, it looks like Guardian Angels for Soldiers' Pet is looking for foster homes for dogs and cats mostly, but if you are able to take a bird, hamster/gerbil, ferret, fish, snake, lizard, turtle, rabbit, horse or other type of pet, I'm sure they would appreciate it too!

Please forward this on to everyone you know to spread the word on this worthwhile program. Thanks very much for your time, and have a great weekend!

I would greatly appreciate the return of the chair or any information as to it's whereabouts, as I do not want to purchase a new chair until I have exhausted all means of locating the old one. I can not offer any reward monies but all tips will remain confidential.

The chair is designed more like a stool than a chair because it sits higher up so instructors can be comfortable at a labratory bench or higher computer workstation. It is blue with wheels. Please refer to the photo of the chair like our missing one.

CAMPUS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP (CCF) CCF has placed two prayer boxes on campus. One is located near the cafeteria in the hallway leading to the Bookstore, and the other is located across from Student Life in the Atrium.

If you would like to have the CCF club members pray for you, a loved one, a friend, the leaders of our country, etc. please fill out a prayer request. There is no need to sign your prayer request unless you would like us to pray for you by your first name. If you are submitting a prayer request for an individual other than yourself, and plan on using their first name, request their permission to do so.

I have placed copies of "The Story of God, the Gospel of John", near the prayer boxes. If you would like a copy please take one. My favorite verse is: John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
