National Novel Writing MonthSubmitted By lpower@mchenry.edu 10/27/2009 5:36:18 PM Phone: 479-7533 November is National Novel Writing Month (who knew?!) and Writer's Block, MCC's brand new creative writing club, is going to work. We're sharpening our pencils and booting up our computers, brewing pots of coffee and making sure we have enough clean unmentionables to last us for thirty days. When the clock strikes midnight on November 1st we'll start working toward a goal of 50,000 words by the end of the month. We'll be staking out spots around campus for writing sessions (November 2, the Commons, 4 - 5 p.m. will be the first) and if you're interested in joining the undertaking, please let us know--we'd love to have you all! Now please be aware that if you're just a kind soul who'd like to sponsor a writer with cookies, we're certainly happy to take those, too. Look forward to more news and novel-writing mini-events to come as our work (hopefully) progresses. Thanks! Laura Power and Lisa Crizer

How would you like to save money on gas and minimize the amount of maintenance to your vehicle while helping the environment at the same time? Pace offers a completely free and confidential website to help you carpool with co-workers. You can register for free at www.pacerideshare.com. This site allows you to enter your work schedule, smoking preference and music preference as well as some athletic preferences and it will match you with co-workers who live within five miles of your home. Participation in this program is completely voluntarily, and your privacy is protected. When other employees see your name, they will only have access to your name and www.mchenry.edu email address. Then, you can choose whether you would like to carpool with that person or not. Those of us who took the shuttle enjoyed perks like the ability to socialize with other employees who we don’t see every day and the ability to sit back and relax while someone else does the driving. We have a small team in place made up of Pat Dieckhoff, Marie Frostman, Whitney Kuhlin and Laura Link and we are interested in receiving your feedback about this program. Upcoming Educational Programs Sponsored by Student Life!Submitted By tkoronkiewicz@mchenry.edu 10/16/2008 9:57:01 AM Phone: 455-8772 I would like to take a moment to share with you upcoming opportunities sponsored by the Student Life and Multicultural Programs office. Please help promote these educational programs to our students. Student Life is showing the movie, Call It Democracy, on Tuesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 23 at 2pm in the Employee Dining Room. Call it Democracy looks at the history of the electoral process in the United States, from the founding of the Electoral College to Bush v. Gore and far beyond. This movie is approximately 75 minutes long and there will be a short discussion on the film afterwards. I encourage you to bring your students to this presentation, as it is extremely relevant with the upcoming presidential election. Please contact me if you are interested in being a part of our panel discussion after the showing. Volunteers are needed! I am very excited about an HIV educational program co-sponsored by Student Life, the Equality Club, and Health Promotions. On Monday, October 27th from 12pm-1pm in the Commons, a speaker from the organization Better Existence with HIV (BeHIV) is presenting for our MCC community. The educational program encompasses statistics, prevention information and a personal story of someone living with HIV. We are also working to have pieces of the AIDS quilt available for viewing on Monday, October 27 and Tuesday, October 28. Lastly, a committee has been formed to brainstorm, plan and implement activities for Black History Month. We would like to have as much input as possible in the planning process. Our goal is to plan programs that faculty, staff and students will enjoy. For faculty, this is a good opportunity to incorporate an educational activity into your curriculum. If you have any ideas for Black History Month programming or would like to be a part of the planning committee, please contact me for further details. Thank you for your support and assistance in helping us promote these programs. Back to topZen Garden Hours To be RevisitedSubmitted By dbieschk@mchenry.edu 10/9/2009 3:46:44 PM Phone: x8728 Bagpipes News Flash: With new administration and a change in art department personnel, the College is exploring the Zen Garden hours and access. The Zen Garden, which opened in fall 2005, was founded by two former art instructors who wanted to make creative use of the empty space between the old Buildings A and the Student Services addition. Lynn Lourie, who retired in August 2008, and Laureen Liu, who resigned several years ago, created the Zen Garden to be used as an outdoor teaching classroom for any MCC faculty member who requests to bring students there for a lesson, especially humanities and Eastern oriented courses, such as Non-Western Art and Non-Western Music. Since then, the art department has taken over where Lynn and Laureen left off and art instructor Amy Ortiz has been designated with the garden’s maintenance. “Now, with new people in those positions, we’re starting to revisit the issue of Zen Garden hours,” said Dr. Thomas Takayama, executive dean of Humanities. “After the Zen Garden opened with an authentic Japanese tea ceremony, the hours seemed so restrictive,” he said. Thomas said he’s forming a committee to discuss the possibility of making the Zen Garden accessible to the public with specific daytime and evening hours. “We all feel there should be regular hours, not 24/7, but set hours, especially in the spring, summer and early fall months,” he said. Ted Hazelgrove, creative writing instructor, eloquently expressed his deep feelings about the Zen Garden hours by writing a column for Sept. 28 issue of The Tartan. See below for Ted's column and accompanying photo:

Back to topH1N1 Update - Absence ProcedureSubmitted By chaggerty@mchenry.edu 10/8/2009 11:32:32 AM Phone: The newly-formed H1N1 Preparedness Committee (HPC) has developed the following H1N1 absence procedure, which applies to both students and employees who exhibit flu-like symptoms: - Students/Employees should stay home while exhibiting flu-like symptoms. For a list of H1N1-related symptoms, visit www.mchenry.edu/flu - Students/Employees must remain at home for 24 hours after their fever is gone, without the use of fever reducing medicine. - Students must follow the instructor's protocol for up to one week's absence (one time only) in order to make up coursework. - Employees without available sick days must contact HR to discuss their options. And always refer to your contract. Overall, the HPC's primary goal is to prevent (or reduce) the possible transmission of the H1N1 influenza virus at MCC by avoiding close contact with those who are ill. How can you help? Please continue to follow preventative measures outlined at: www.mchenry.edu/flu and be sure to share the above absence procedure with students. If you have any questions, please contact any of the HPC: Tony Miksa; Angelina Castillo; Normah Salleh-Barone; Christina Haggerty; Ed Hall; Bev Dow; Jonna Kivisto; Lesley Frederick; and Michael Clesceri. Thank you for your continued collaboration in this effort.

Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance? Thanks, Patt Mills, X8759 Wanted: The extra fleece fabric you don't know what to do with...Submitted By jlefevre@mchenry.edu 10/22/2008 10:42:02 AM Phone: x8562 My daughter's Brownie troop is making blankets for children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need as one of their community service projects for the year. They will be distributed through the Project Linus organization (see link below for more information). There are so many crafty folks here at the college, I thought I would ask if anyone had fleece leftover from another project that they didn't know what to do with. The most popular sizes of blankets are 40”x40” (babies); 42”x60” (toddlers) and 50”x72” (teens) but ANY size fleece is greatly appreciated. We can sew them together to make the size we need. The girls will be making the blankets on Wednesday, November 5, so if I could receive any donations by Tuesday, November 4, I can get them to the troop leader. I am in room A136 across from the duplication center, or call me at x8562 and I will come and pick up your donation. THANKS VERY MUCH!
