Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) - Student Records
In June 1976, the
U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare issued the final regulations
for implementing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of
1975,
as amended. The "Buckley Amendment," as this law is commonly
called, details confidentiality for student records.
McHenry County College has complied with this act by:
- Establishing written procedure statements covering privacy rights of students.
- Notifying students of their rights under the Act, and giving public
notice of the categories of personally identifiable information which
the College has designated as public or directory information. Directory
information includes: name, hometown, enrollment status, image, major
of study, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, the most
recent educational agency or institution attended by the student,
participation in officially
recognized activities and sports, height and weight of members of
athletic teams. Currently enrolled students may withhold directory
information by notifying the Office of Records in writing within
two weeks after the first day of classes for the semester.
- In accordance with the provisions of Public Law 93-380 (Privacy
Act of 1974), a student currently or formerly enrolled at McHenry
County College has the right of access to his or her records as allowed
under the Act.
The Director of Records
