African American History Month Essay Contest
Official Rules and Guidelines
The essay contest is open students in grades 4 through college who reside within McHenry County.
One winner will be selected from each of the following categories:
- Grades 4 through 8
- Grades 9 through 12
- College students
Important Contest Dates
- Entries must be postmarked by February 12, 2010.
- Winners will be notified by February 19, 2010.
- Prizes will be awarded February 25, 2010.

About the Topic
Essays should address the following topic: What Strategies from the Civil Rights Movement Can We Employ Today To Counteract Injustices?
- Submit only one essay per student.
- Essays should be no longer than 500 words in length. Type or handwrite in print only. No cursive writing will be accepted.
- If you are a student in grades 4 through 12, include a completed parental waiver form PDF with your essay.
- Include your name, home address, telephone number, email address, the school you attend, grade level and title of the essay.
Prizes
One winner will be chosen from each category and a monetary award given to this winner
- Grades 4 through 8: $100 award
- Grades 9 through 12: $300 award
- College students: $500 award
Winners will be announced and must recite their essays at the Legacy Celebration, which will be held in the MCC Conference Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m., February 25, 2010.
The Legacy Celebration will include musical performances and closing remarks by members of the Trinity Baptist Community Church. Prizes will be awarded at this event.
