ADN Program Course Descriptions
The ADN program is awaiting approval by the Illinois Community College Board and the Illinois Board of Nursing. Plans are in place to seek accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
HCE 110: Pharmacology
This course will introduce the basic principles of pharmacology, including the ethical and legal implications of medication administration. The emphasis of the course will be to review mathematical skills and measurement systems basic to the calculation of medication doses and assist the student in identifying and using information needed for the safe administration of medication. 1 credit hour
Prerequisite(s): MAT 099 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher, or a qualifying score on the math placement test; completion of or concurrent enrollment in BIO 157 is highly recommended.

HCE 111: Information Literacy and Healthcare
This course provides students with tools needed to establish an awareness of, and comfort with, information resources. Instruction and practice will be on the effective and efficient identification, acquisition, evaluation, use, and communication of information. Information issues and their effects on society and relationship to healthcare will be emphasized.
Prerequisite(s): None; Computer Literacy - CIS 110 is highly recommended.

NUR 110: Nursing Practice I
Nursing practice is studied using functional health patterns within the context of the contemporary healthcare delivery system. Areas of emphasis include foundational knowledge of nursing practice, skills acquisition, and the care of clients with health perception-health management, value-belief, and rest-sleep dysfunctional health patterns. (9 credit hours)
Note: One month prior to the first day of class, students must submit proof of the following information to the Department Chair.
- A current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
- The Student Health Record requirements, including drug screening, using the program-approved form(s).
- The program-approved criminal background check.
Prerequisite(s):
- Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program OR permit required from Department Chair.
- HCE 110, Introduction to Pharmacology, with a grade of ‘C’ or higher.
- HCE 111, Information Literacy and Healthcare, with a grade of ‘C’ or higher.
- Credit, with a grade of ‘C’ or higher, or concurrent enrollment in BIO 260, Human Anatomy and Physiology.
- Credit, with a grade of ‘C’ or higher, or concurrent enrollment in ENG 151, Composition I.

NUR 120: Nursing Practice II
This course will focus on the application of the core components of nursing to adult clients, with an emphasis on the care of clients with activity-exercise and nutritional-metabolic dysfunctional health patterns. (9 credit hours)
Note: One month prior to the first day of class, students must submit proof of or an updated copy of the following information to the Department Chair.
- A current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
- The Student Health Record requirements, including drug screening, using the program-approved form(s).
- The program-approved criminal background check.
Prerequisite(s):
- Permit required from Department Chair.

NUR 210: Nursing Practice III
This course will focus on the application of the core components of nursing to adult clients, with an emphasis on the care of clients with elimination, cognitive-perception, self-concept, role-relationship, and coping-stress-tolerance dysfunctional health patterns.
Note: One month prior to the first day of class, students must submit proof of or an updated copy of the following information to the Department Chair.
- A current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.

NUR 220: Family Nursing
This course will focus on the application of the core components of nursing to the care of childbearing and childrearing families experiencing functional and dysfunctional health patterns.

- A current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.

NUR 230: Transition to Professional Practice
This is the capstone course of the registered nursing program and includes 135 clock hours of direct patient care in a healthcare setting. The focus of the course is on the synthesis and application of the core components of nursing in the transition from student to graduate nurse, with an emphasis on leadership, management of care, skill development, and professionalism.
Note:
- Students must successfully pass the final exam, which is currently designated as the standardized Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) RN Exit Exam (E2)™. Authorization to take the NCLEX-RN for licensure will not be issued by the Department Chair until the final exam requirement is met. Students not passing the final exam will not be eligible for graduation, will receive a grade of ‘Incomplete’ in the course, and will be required to take an individualized remediation course, NUR 095. Students will have (one) opportunity to retake the final exam following remediation. Students not passing the HESI RN Exit Exam (E2)™ on their second attempt will receive a grade of ‘F’ in NUR 230 and must follow the progression policy of the department to be considered for re-admittance into the program.

NUR 095: Directed Study in Nursing
Directed study offers students an opportunity to work with a faculty member on an individualized program of study while preparing them for the NCLEX-RN. Students will develop and implement a plan for remediation, using resources identified and provided by Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI). Successful completion of this course will be determined by the score achieved on the HESI Exit Exam (E2). Note: Credit cannot be applied to a degree or certificate. (1 credit hour)
