McHenry County College student Shannon Shefcik, who also is a graduating senior Marengo Community High School, is the local winner of the Illinois Community College Trustee Association's Paul Simon Student Essay Contest. She was selected out of 21 essays to represent MCC in the statewide contest.

A portable cascade system has been donated to the Friends of McHenry County College (MCC) by Air One Equipment, Inc. of South Elgin for MCC fire science classes to refill air tanks during live fire training.

Online continuing education classes and career training programs are available through McHenry County College's Continuing Education Department, in partnership with ed2go. These classes allow students to learn a new career or enhance a current one at their convenience. Lessons can be accessed anytime and anywhere.

The preschool program at McHenry County College Children's Learning Center is accepting registration for fall 2013. Openings currently exist for the three-year-old class from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and the four-year-old class from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. In addition, the five-year-old afternoon class runs from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Check out the new, lower rates today.

Meet MCC student and dad Joe Bilodeau of Woodstock, who will graduate this May with an Associate in Applied Science degree in manufacturing management through MCC's Fast Track program. A member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, he was one of only 30 students to win a prestigious Distinguished Chapter Officer Award from more than 1,300 chapters internationally.

The McHenry County College Library will expand its library collection of print and audiovisual materials related to or of interest to two of the county's diverse student populations: African American students and Latino students. The expansion is made possible from a $5,000 "Back to Books" federal grant for a project titled, "The Changing Faces of McHenry County."

Area residents may purchase annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets of flowers at the annual Bedding Plant Sale sponsored by the McHenry County College Greenhouse Production class. The sale will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9, rain or shine.

McHenry County College will present a Student Recital at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 5 in the Luecht Conference Center at the College, located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

More than 150 high school accounting schools students flexed their mental muscle as they tested their numerical competence and problem-solving skills at McHenry County College's 11th annual High School Accounting Bowl on April 26. Eight county high schools participated in the event, which was divided into two levels, Accounting 1, geared for first-year accounting students and Accounting 2, for those completing two years of high school accounting.
