MCC BIOLOGY INSTRUCTOR'S DAMSELFLY FIELD GUIDE PUBLISHED ONLINE BY FIELD MUSEUM |

Marla Garrison, McHenry County College Biology instructor, is the author of "Damselflies of Chicagoland, A Photo Field Guide" that was recently published online by the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago as part of their Chicago Wilderness Series of Rapid Color Guides. Three years ago, Garrison began photographing in situ the 39 species of damselflies found in the Chicago area. Rain or shine she stalked them in forest preserves, state parks, nature preserves, and private lands for close-up views of these narrow-bodied, pin-sized insects. Two of the species are actually new discoveries for our area.

MCC CONTINUES "GETTING STARTED" SEMINARS FOR RETURNING ADULT STUDENTS |

Taking those first steps toward getting a college education can be difficult-especially if you've been out of school for awhile. Just ask Helen Jost, adult recruitment specialist at McHenry County College. Jost specializes in helping older students-those who have been out of high school for several years or more-get started at MCC. To help students feel more comfortable, Jost will be hosting "Getting Started" seminars at the college from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15 in room A262 and Thursday, Sept. 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room A262. The seminars are free of charge.

MCC'S RETIRED ADULT PROGRAM OFFERS REFLECTIONS OF A PHOTOJOURNALIST |

The Retired Adult Program at McHenry County College will offer "Hat & Coat - Reflections of a Photojournalist" for both members and non-members from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7 in room B166-167. The program features Jerry Tomaselli, an award-winning Chicago news photographer who worked at the Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune. As one of the Sun-Times photographers, "hat and coat" was the cryptic but unmistakable command by photo chief Bob Kotalik to drop whatever you were doing and head to the scene of a breaking story. "Hat and coat" is just one of hundreds of vivid memories Tomaselli has gathered over his 35 years as an award-winning Chicago news photographer. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

The Continuing and Professional Education Division at McHenry County College is offering several opportunities this fall for career development in the medical field. September classes include pharmacy technician, veterinary assistant, medical billing and coding, and a new ICD-10 course. ICD-10 is an upgraded healthcare diagnostic and procedural coding system mandated by the Federal government for use in the healthcare industry beginning Oct. 1, 2013. For those who are currently working or looking for work during the day, many of the professional programs at MCC offer evening, online or blended options, which allows much of the coursework to be done online.

MCC RECEIVES MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL DESIGNATION |

McHenry County College was recently designated as a Military Friendly School for 2011 by G.I. Jobs magazine, which honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's veterans as students. Schools on the list include state universities, private colleges, community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience. The magazine polled more than 7,000 state schools nationwide in determining the results, examining criteria such as efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students, and academic accreditations.

For those looking to receive professional training in home inspection, commercial and residential electric codes may join McHenry County College's Professional Education classes offered in September. Home Inspection prerequisite training class will meet from 6-9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 13 through Nov. 10 in room E102 at MCC. This 60-hour course prepares future home inspectors for the state licensing examination. Topics include: residential inspections, including exteriors, electric, and heating. A combined Commercial and Residential Electric Code class will take place from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 16 through Dec. 9. in E104 at MCC.

The introductory Welding Boot Camp program is a 40-hour course that will basic welding technology and terminology, blueprint reading, basic math used in the welding trade, basic welding skills and plant safety. The Student Peace Action Network (SPAN) at McHenry County College will host "Drones on Trial," a presentation featuring a first-hand account from Afghanistan and Pakistan by Kathy Kelly, three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1. Kelly, co-founder of Voices for Creative Nonviolence in Chicago and three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, will speak about her recent visit to Pakistan and Afghanistan where she met with victims of U.S. drone (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) attacks. The Second Sunday Concert Series at McHenry County College begins its 2010-2011 season at 3 p.m. on Sept. 12 featuring classical guitarist Brian Torosian. The concert will be held in the MCC Conference Center, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14, Crystal Lake. Torosian is an active soloist and chamber musician on guitar, lute and mandolin. In addition to performing on the standard six-string guitar, Torosian also concertizes on replicas of a Baroque guitar, a Terz guitar, and a 10-string guitar. Torosian's musical programs feature rare guitar masterworks from his vast collection of scores, well-known classical guitar favorites, and his own transcriptions and arrangements. Free admission.

McHenry County College announces a new degree for anyone interested in becoming a special education teacher. The Special Education Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree begins this fall semester and transfers as a complete package toward completing a bachelor's degree at Northern Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University and Western Illinois University. MCC's Special Education Associate of Arts in Teaching degree is a two-year transfer degree that prepares students for careers in teaching special education and introduces students to the teaching professions, the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards (IPTS), and the role of teachers in American public schools today.

McHenry County College announces a new online degree in Business Management through the Fast Track program, offering adults 24 and older a more convenient option for earning a certificate or accelerated associate degree. Students who enroll in the Fast Track Business Management program may choose to complete their degree online or in the traditional classroom setting. The Business Management online degree program is beneficial to those who work a second shift or hours that change on a regular basis or someone who has life obligations making it difficult to attend classes regularly. Additionally, the Business Management online courses feature a standard online rate and out-of-district rates do not apply.
