Adults ages 50 and older are welcome to join stimulating and thought provoking discussions this summer with the Retired Adult Program (RAP) at McHenry County College. Topics explored this summer include the U.S. healthcare system, Native American history, and exploring the life of actor Cary Grant. The classes offer a socially-rewarding venue to share knowledge and expertise within a peer group. The cost for a one-year membership is $25, and you must be a member to register for classes.

Explore the great outdoors with enjoyable and interesting classes offered through McHenry County College's Continuing Education Department. Take a class for fun or use toward a certificate as part of the Ecological Restoration Certificate Program (ERCP), the first-ever educational program that covers the philosophy and practice of ecological restoration and the natural history and science that supports restoration. Classes include: ERCP: Plants of Wetlands, Biking Through the Seasons, A Natural Garden in Your Yard: A Mentoring Program, ERCP: Plants of Prairies and Savannas, and ERCP: Glaciers, Mud, Gravel, Sand, Soil and Other Stuff.

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 MCC WELCOMES NEW ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS
McHenry County College welcomes Juletta Patrick as the new assistant vice president of Academic and Student Affairs. She replaces Normah Salleh-Barone, who joined Moraine Valley Community College as vice president of Student Development in April. Patrick, who lives in DeKalb, began her new role with MCC on June 14. She will work collaboratively with Tony Miksa, vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, in the areas of academic and student support services, curriculum, program review, identification, application and management of grants and contracts. She is also responsible for faculty development, developing and maintaining articulation agreements, and coordinating related special projects in the Academic and Student Affairs Division.

Friday, June 18, 2010 MCC STUDENT RECOGNIZED FOR STUDENT TRUSTEE EXCELLENCE
McHenry County College student Cody Sheriff of McHenry was awarded the Gigi Campbell Student Trustee Excellence Award from the Illinois Community College Board. The MCC Board of Trustees appointed student trustee last summer. He recently was elected by his peers to serve a second term. Sheriff is a member of nine student organizations, including Student Senate and attends many events sponsored by other clubs, attends college athletic events and acts as the College mascot. He was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. To be eligible for the award, Sheriff submitted an essay about "How MCC Changed My Life." He said that the College changed him not only academically, but personally as well. He graduated from McHenry West High School in 2008.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 LEARN TO WELD WITH MCHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE
McHenry County College's Corporate and Continuing Education Department is offering introductory Welding Boot Camp from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning Saturday, June 19 through Aug. 14. Another introductory class meets on weeknights from 6 to 9:20 p.m. from June 28 through Aug. 9. Cost for each session is $1,000. The introductory Welding Boot Camp program is a 40-hour course provides students with a basic understanding of and hands-on experience in the welding profession. Training will include instruction in basic welding technology and terminology, blueprint reading, basic math used in the welding trade, basic welding skills and plant safety. All classes are held at the Woodstock Center at 912 Trakk Lane in Woodstock.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 MCC TO OFFER TRIP TO AUDUBON INN, HORICON MARSH BOAT TOUR

Spend a leisurely day visiting the Audubon Inn and a narrated boat tour of Horicon Marsh on a trip offered by McHenry County College from 8:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 21. A motor coach will leave from the College's circular drive in parking lot B.

The Audubon Inn, named for the French-American ornithologist John James Audubon, was built in 1896 and is located at the gateway to the Horicon Marsh in Mayville, Wis. After lunch, enjoy the serenity of the surroundings on a narrated pontoon boat tour of Horicon Marsh. We'll stop for coffee on the way home at Berres Brother's Coffee Roaster in Watertown, Wis. Cost is $99. Register by June 25.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 SCHOLARS AND STEEPLES TOUR JUNE 19

Step back into yesteryear and view historic rural schools and country churches in McHenry County at the Scholars and Steeples Tour from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19. A motor coach bus will leave from McHenry County College's circular drive entrance in parking lot B at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake. This is the third annual tour of our county's landmark rural schools, sponsored by McHenry County College and the McHenry County Historical Society. The churches are a new addition to the tour.

Much of the tour will take place in the scenic Richmond, Spring Grove and Hebron areas. Cost is $49, which includes lunch at the Grand Old Mill Inn in Wonder Lake.

Friday, June 11, 2010 SHAH CENTER BREAKFAST SERIES TO FEATURE "NETWORKING FOR ENHANCED COLLABORATION"
McHenry County College Shah Center will host its monthly breakfast series "Start@Shah" from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday, July 16 at the Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane in McHenry. The series' focus is on issues relevant for today's leaders. The July topic, "Networking for Enhanced Collaboration" will highlight how today's jobs are more complex and demanding, which increases the need for information and expertise from diverse contacts across and outside the organization. This Developmental Dimensions International (DDI) overview demonstrates how building business networks and enhancing collaboration across the organization contributes to a company's success.

Friday, June 11, 2010 "FIVE DYSFUNCTIONS OF A TEAM" TOPIC OF LEADERSHIP TRAINING AT MCC SHAH CENTER
McHenry County College Shah Center is offering leadership training based on Patrick Lencioni's best-selling "Five Dysfunctions of a Team." The course meets from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, July 21 and 28. This course explores and addresses the fundamental causes of organizational politics and team failure. These are: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. Participants will obtain tools to begin the process of building a functional, lasting team. This training is appropriate for front-line through senior-level leaders. Cost is $249.

Friday, June 11, 2010 MCC TO OFFER A NEW SPECIAL INTEREST CLASS FOR FLIGHT ENTHUSIASTS
Discover the fascinating world of things that fly with Catch the Sky, a six-week course through McHenry County College's Continuing Education Department that meets from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays, June 19 through July 31 in room D154 at the college. Flight enthusiasts will build a scale model hot air balloon, balsa plane, parachute, kite and their own unique paper airplane design to fly in a class contest. Participants will also launch a rocket and operate a hand-held flight computer and navigational chart to plan a cross-country flight. Cost is $89, plus approximately $30 for supplies. A supply list will be given out on the first day of class.

Friday, June 11, 2010 MCHENRY COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS' GARDEN WALK SET JULY 10

The McHenry County Master Gardeners' Garden Walk 2010 will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 10 beginning at the Master Gardeners' Demonstration Garden at McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

Co-sponsored by McHenry County College and the McHenry County Master Gardeners with the University of Illinois Extension, this self-guided, day-long tour includes seven private gardens in the Crystal Lake/Huntley/Marengo areas and includes a wide variety of garden styles, including Trudi Temple's Marengo homestead and organic farm. Temple, founder of Market Day, a fundraising food cooperative, was the keynote speaker at MCC's Gardenfest event in April.

Friday, June 11, 2010 MCC STUDENT WINS BRONZE MEDAL IN SCIENCE COMPETITION
McHenry County College student, Maria Nellessen of Hebron, was awarded a bronze medal at the first Skyway Collegiate Conference STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) poster competition which was held at Waubonsee Community College. Maria's poster was titled "The Effect of Osmotic Upshock on UV Radiation Resistance in Escherichia Coli" and was awarded a third place bronze medal out of more than 30 submitted posters in the general science category.

Friday, June 11, 2010 MCC ENGINEERING STUDENTS COMPETE IN CATAPULT CONTEST
Four McHenry County College students won the precision event at the second annual Suburban Chicago Intercollegiate Catapult Contest at the College of Lake County. Engineering students from area community colleges designed and built their own catapults, which were entered into the contest. Competitions were held in the categories of distance, accuracy, and precision. The three events are designed to accurately gauge the performance demands placed on the original siege machines of old. The McHenry County team finished fifth overall out of a total of 12 teams. Members of the MCC team included Kevin Vesely of Woodstock, Tom Cholly of Spring Grove, Laura Gallagher of Union, and Alex Sistko of Crystal Lake.

Monday, June 07, 2010 PARAPROFESSIONAL TEST PREPARATION OFFERED AT MCHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE
A Paraprofessional Test Preparation class will be offered at McHenry County College from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, June 21 through Friday, June 25. The course costs $60 and is designed for paraprofessionals and those who plan to work as paraprofessionals in the education system. The course is intended to serve as a refresher/review course of subject matter learned in previous educational experiences. It will focus on reading, writing and math skills in preparation to take the ACT WorkKeys(r) Assessment. The WorkKeys Assessment will be given from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, June 28 for an additional fee of $55.

The Illinois Small Business Development Center (ISBDC) at McHenry County College is offering opportunities and assistance to small businesses. Kicking off July's programs is the monthly Branding Brainstorming group that meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 1. Branding Brainstorming is a no-cost seminar to collaboratively discuss various approaches to marketing and apply the strategies to your business. This monthly group meets every on the first Thursday of every month. Thursday, June 03, 2010 MCC ART STUDENTS' ARTWORK SELECTED FOR REGIONAL, STATE COMPETITIONS
Nine McHenry County College students had their artwork selected for the Skyway Juried Art Competition, hosted recently at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines. The art students whose art was displayed in the Skyway Art Competition were: Belen Ashley of Fox River Grove, ceramics; Leanna Borden of McHenry, ceramics; Andrew Bourn of Wonder Lake, painting; Reidin Dintzner of Woodstock, jewelry; Kristina French of Algonquin, painting; John Gilmore, Jr., Crystal Lake, ceramics; Mary Mariutto of Crystal Lake, painting; Kendra Trauth of Crystal Lake, ceramics; and Andrew Vadnais of Cary, jewelry. In a separate, statewide competition, Andy Lechner, McHenry, won Best of Show award for his "Desert Flight," at the Illinois Community College Juried Art Exhibition at Governors State University.

McHenry County College wishes to announce that Kathleen Plinske, interim president, will be leaving the College after accepting the position of provost of the Osceola Campus at Valencia Community College in Kissimmee, Florida. As provost, she will act as chief academic and operating officer of the campus, responsible for providing academic, administrative and fiscal leadership.

Thirty-six McHenry County College students had their artwork selected for the MCC Student Art Exhibit 2010 that will be on display in Gallery One in the library through June 9. Award winners include: first place, Rick Neubauer, McHenry, for his oil on canvas titled, "Prime Factor;" second Place, Debra Virgens, McHenry, for her ceramic piece titled "Lucies," and third place, Nancy Bingham, Woodstock, for her untitled oil on canvas. In addition, honorable mentions were awarded to Reidin Dintzner, Woodstock, for "Windows to Space and Time," a copper, steel and brass piece; Wyatt Goins, Woodstock, for "Self Portrait," a oil on canvas piece; Andy Lechner, McHenry, for his ceramic work, "Desert Flight," and Jeanette Sergel, Woodstock, for "Lava," digital photography.

Tuesday, June 01, 2010 MCC TO OFFER CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT COURSE FOR ESL LEARNERS
McHenry County College will offer a new Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training opportunity specifically for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners beginning this fall. This is a non-credit pre-CNA class offered simultaneously with the accredited CNA course. Those whose native language is not English and are interested in learning more about this CNA course may attend one of five Pre-CNA Information Sessions offered from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 1, June 10, June 15, June 22 and June 29. All of the information sessions are free and will be held at MCC in Room B166-167, except the June 29 session will take place in Room B168-169.

Tuesday, June 01, 2010 MCC TO OFFER BUILDING CODES CLASS FOR INTERIOR DESIGN

McHenry County College is offering a Building Codes for Interior Design class that meets from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, June 14 through July 12 in Room E104 at the college. This class will focus on residential building, electrical and mechanical code issues pertinent to the remodeling of kitchens, bathrooms, and other home renovations. The class will cover "hang ups" that typically occur in these types of design projects, as well as some structural topics. Participants must bring a copy of the book, "Building Code Basics: Residential, Based on the 2009 IRC." This book is available through the International Code Council (ICC) at www.iccsafe.org. Cost of the class is $125.

McHenry County College has partnered with Stonegate Conference and Banquet Centre to offer a four-week Wedding Consultant course. The class meets from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, June 9 through June 30 in Room A207 at the college. Participants will learn how to consult with brides, grooms, family members and vendors to plan the perfect memory, including managing details ranging from the ceremony to the wedding cake with finesse. Also featured is a class project and an opportunity to attend one out-of-class field trip. Cost is $319, which includes materials.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a real estate agent may receive training from a real estate pre-licensing class offered by McHenry County College's Professional Education Department from 6 to 8:50 p.m June 7 through July 29. The class will meet on Monday and Thursday evenings in Room A226 at MCC. Cost of the class is $315, which includes the textbook.

How would you like to work undercover? McHenry County College's Professional Education Department will offer an Introduction to Private Investigation course from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 3 through July 22. This class will meet in Room A119. If locating people's lost loved ones or investigating fraud appeals to you, or if you enjoy interviewing witnesses to cases, this is a perfect opportunity to learn more about a new career. This course is taught by a working licensed private detective. Cost is $209, which includes all course materials.
