McHenry County College's International Studies Department continues an International Film Festival series through April featuring "Seeds of Hunger," at 2 and 6 p.m. Thursday, April 8 and "Young Freud in Gaza," at 2 and 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 27 in the MCC Conference Center, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake. Tuesday, March 30, 2010 INFORMATION LITERACY FOR EDUCATORS OFFERED AT MCHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE
McHenry County College has partnered with Aurora University to offer two separate middle school endorsement classes this summer at McHenry County College. Three graduate credits are available for each class. Middle School: Mission and Methods will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 21-25 and Adolescent Development and Learning will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 28 through July 2. Cost is $750 per class. Checks should be made payable to Aurora University and are due April 19 in the office of Educational Opportunities at MCC.

McHenry County College is offering three exciting trips this summer for those who love fun, travel and adventure, featuring a Chicago architectural boat tour, a trip to see Shrek, the Musical and a four-day trip to the Grand Ole Opry. Monday, March 29, 2010 MCC TO HOST "THE FREEDOM OF FORGIVENESS," A SEMINAR FOR PROFESSIONALS; PLUS AN EVENING WORKSHOP
MCC will host "The Freedom of Forgiveness," a seminar for psychologists, counselors, family therapists, nurses, social workers, and other professionals, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29 in the Conference Center. Mary Hayes Grieco will discuss how forgiveness is an effective process that helps clients become free of past hurts. Grieco will teach professionals how to develop strategies for applying the "Eight Steps of Forgiveness" in a clinical practice. Cost is $79 or $64 for SEDOM employees. In the evening, Grieco will present a free evening workshop for families and parents, titled "Forgiveness: Key to Health and Family Harmony" from 7-9 p.m. in the conference center.

Friday, March 26, 2010 MCC TO HOST FINAL SPEAKER SERIES EVENTS FEATURING FILM, DEBATE
Join McHenry County College for a special screening of "Food, Inc." Tuesday, April 13 and "Food Fight: A Debate" Thursday, April 22. Both events start at 6 p.m. in the MCC Conference Center and are final installments of MCC's Spring 2010 Speaker Series, "An Affair with Food," featuring distinguished MCC faculty speaking on hot topics related to food. The food debate will feature MCC award-winning Forensics Team and MCC faculty members Sarah Ruthven, art history/appreciation and Jim Gould, philosophy. In addition, on April 22 from 6:30-6:45, a lecture/discussion on "Nutrition and the Obesity Epidemic," will be presented by Elaine Whalen, lead instructor of Health and Fitness Education.

Dying to Dine will feature a four-course mystery dining experience featuring MCC culinary students and Forensics Team members. Admission is $45 in advance or $55 at the door.

Listen to master gardeners and other experts on how to create a beautiful garden, including unique ways to grow vegetables, herb gardens, and tropical plants. McHenry County College will kick off its first-ever monthly McHenry County Culinary Celebrity Dining Series with Dying to Dine: Mystery Dinner Theatre at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27 at Woodstock North High School, 3000 Raffel Road in Woodstock. Dying to Dine will feature a four-course mystery dining experience hosted by Chef Thomas Kaltenecker, CHE, MCFE, executive chef and instructor of culinary management at MCC and Bonnie Gabel, advisor of the award-winning MCC Forensics Team. MCC culinary students will make the hors d' oeuvres, dinner and dessert, along with serve the food and forensics team members will perform a murder mystery dinner theatre. Admission for the murder mystery theatre event is $45 in advance or $55 at the door.

Thursday, March 18, 2010 MCC TO HOST COMEDY FUNDRAISERS TO BENEFIT TURNING POINT
Proceeds from two upcoming comedy events at McHenry County College will benefit Turning Point, a domestic violence agency and shelter in McHenry County, and Pride Call, a new local phone line to assist GLBT individuals. On March 31 at 7 p.m. in the MCC Conference Center, Student Life and the Equality Club at MCC will host an Amateur Stand Up Comedy Contest with professional comedian Matt Drufke hosting. Professional comedian Lewis Rhine will also perform. Aspiring comedians should prepare a five-minute set and call the MCC Student Life Office to register. Winner of the March 31 contest will earn a slot at the college's Comedy Showcase fundraiser on April 15, also in the conference center.

Construction work zone flaggers have one of the most important and dangerous occupations in construction maintenance. Wednesday, March 17, 2010 MCC TO OFFER PARAPROFESSIONAL TEST PREPARATION
A Paraprofessional Test Preparation class will be offered at McHenry County College from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays, April 10 through May 15. There will be no class on May 8. The course is designed for paraprofessionals and those who plan to work as paraprofessionals in the education system. The course will focus on reading, writing and math skills in preparation to take the ACT WorkKeys(r) Assessment. The curriculum is intended to serve as a refresher/review course of subject matter learned in previous educational experiences. Those with a minimum of 60 college credits or a degree from a foreign university may not need to take the assessment. Class will begin with a cost of $60.

Anyone interested in becoming a literacy volunteer to teach reading, math or English as a Second Language at McHenry County College or at local libraries, are welcome to join the next volunteer training sessions from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays in Room A213 and Thursdays in Room A342, March 30 to April 15 or from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, April 3, 10 and 17 in Room A352. A literacy volunteer tutor does not have to speak a second language to teach in the adult education literacy program. The free basic training provides the information and skills needed to work with literacy students. Flexible work schedules are provided to meet people's busy schedules.

MCC's Forensics Team won a team award for the first time at a state tournament and took third place at the Illinois Inter-Collegiate Forensics Association State Tournament hosted recently by Illinois Central College in East Peoria. McHenry County College leads the state in student enrollment growth from last spring to this spring with a headcount of 7,381, an increase of 28.4 percent from last spring's headcount of 5,749, according to 10th day figures reported to the state. This growth continues an upward trend from last fall that reflects the ongoing MCC Promise program, as well as both traditional and adult students pursuing degrees and/or career training for new careers or to enhance their current job skills. MCC's enrollment growth also reflects the continued economic downturn and a national trend of community college enrollment growth.

Save your green from St. Patrick's Day to wear on a trip with McHenry County College to see the Broadway production of "SHREK, the Musical" at the Cadillac Palace in Chicago on Wednesday, Aug. 4. A motorcoach bus leaves the College parking lot at 9:15 a.m. and returns at 7 p.m. the day of the show. The McHenry County College Athletics Department, in conjunction with MCC Lady Scots' softball, is sponsoring the inaugural "ScotStars" Softball Clinic from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 14 for girls ages 8-12. The clinic sessions are coordinated by the MCC softball coaching staff and will be held in the MCC Gym located in Building A on the college campus, located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake. The 2010 Lady Scots softball team will be available to assist the participants. Participants will learn and practice skills, improve self-confidence, knowledge, ability, and appreciate the positive aspects of softball. Cost is $30 for hitting and other skills clinic (2 hours), $15 for pitching clinic (1 hour) or $45 for both clinics.

A Crew Management Safety Seminar will be taught from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 12 at the Shah Center in McHenry. This program has been well-attended in the past by crews working in the county and it continues to be a successful, safety-conscious program that includes a "Crew Management Certificate" for attendees. The McHenry County College Student Peace Action Network (SPAN) will host a seminar titled, "The United States: Leading Jailer of the World," at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4 in the college's conference center. Monday, March 01, 2010 MCC TO LAUNCH PRIORITY REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER SEMESTER
McHenry County College will launch a new priority registration system for the Summer 2010 semester, giving currently enrolled students who are nearest to degree completion priority when enrolling in courses they need to complete their degree. Priority registration for summer classes will be available from March 9 through March 12, either in-person in the MCC Registration Office, Room A258 or using Internet registration at any computer terminal on campus. Current students will receive a postcard with their priority registration date, which is the first day students will be allowed to register. Students may register on or after their priority date. Off-campus Internet registration and new student registration will not be available until 8 a.m. beginning March 15

Monday, March 01, 2010 OSHA 10-HOUR FOR GENERAL INDUSTRY TRAINING SET AT SHAH CENTER
The McHenry County College Shah Center is accepting registrations for the OSHA 10-hour in General Industry training that meets from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, March 15 and 17. This course, facilitated by OSHA certified Accident Prevention Corporation, is ideal for supervisors with safety and health responsibilities and for employee safety and health awareness. Participants will be introduced to OSHA policies, procedures and standards as well as general industry safety and health principles covered in OSHA Act Part 1910. This program will be held at the Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane in McHenry. Cost is $159, which includes materials.

Monday, March 01, 2010 "FIVE DYSFUNCTIONS OF A TEAM" COURSE OFFERED AT MCC SHAH CENTER
Leadership training based on Patrick Lencioni's best-selling "Five Dysfunctions of a Team" will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 17 and 24 at the McHenry County College Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane in McHenry. This course explores and addresses the fundamental causes of organizational politics and team failure, which include: Absence of Trust, Fear of Conflict, Lack of Commitment, Avoidance of Accountability, and Inattention to Results. Participants will obtain tools to begin the process of building a functional, lasting team. This training is appropriate for front-line through senior-level leaders.
