MCC to Host "Equal Means Equal" Documentary[Monday, October 9, 2017]
The Student Peace Action Network of McHenry County College will host "Equal Means Equal," a documentary urging the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18 in B178, the Scot Room and at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 in Room B166-167.
"Equal Means Equal" focuses on how women are treated in the U.S. today, revealing how discriminatory attitudes and inadequate laws impact women’s lives. The film offers an unflinching look at how women are treated in the United States today.
Examining both real-life stories and precedent-setting legal cases, director Kamala Lopez uncovers how outdated and discriminatory attitudes inform and influence seemingly disparate issues, from workplace harassment to domestic violence, rape and sexual assault to the foster care system, and the healthcare conglomerate to the judicial system. Along the way, she reveals the inadequacy of present laws that claim to protect women, ultimately presenting a compelling and persuasive argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.
This event is free and open to the public. The event is co-sponsored by the McHenry County League of Women Voters (LWV) and the Crystal Lake chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
