Gardening, Conservation Classes Offered at McHenry County College

Learn how to create the beautiful gardens you’ve dreamed of and or explore prairie restoration, vernal pools and spring wildflowers with these spring classes offered by the McHenry County College Continuing Education Department.

The following classes are available:

Creating a Butterfly Garden with Native Plants: Get a fascinating look into the lives of butterflies and how to choose plants that will attract and sustain them. Native plants are essential to a successful and low-maintenance landscape that will provide year-round beauty and the opportunity to observe the life cycle of butterflies up close. Beginners and experienced gardeners will learn practical tips for planning, planting, and growing their own butterfly garden, and how it fits into the local ecosystem. Class takes place from 7-8:20 p.m. Thursday, March 16 in Room A206. Cost is $19. Use course code: NPG S29 003 to register.

Conservation@Home:Landscaping for Wildlife: Want to add environmentally-friendly aspects to your yard, or attract butterflies and birds? Or maybe you’re already doing these things and are interested in our certification program. Join Sarah Michehl from The Land Conservancy of McHenry County ( to learn more about the Conservation@Home program. Your backyard can make a difference. Class takes place from 7-7:50 p.m. Thursday, March 23 in Room A206. Cost is $15. Use course code: NPG S53 002 to register.

Learn to Burn: Join The Land Conservancy’s restoration ecologist to learn how to use fire to manage prairies, wetlands, and woodlands safely. The class will be inside and outside, so dress appropriately. Safety equipment will be provided. Lunch is included. Class takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at the Hennen Conservation District in Woodstock. Cost is $65. Use course code NPG S52 002 to register.

Vernal Pools Hike: Vernal pools are a little known but extremely important feature that occurs in our McHenry County Oak Woods. Come learn why these pools are essential for amphibians and other creatures like fairy shrimp. Dress to get muddy and dirty. Signs will be posted for parking. Class takes place from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, April 15 at the Bangert Conservation in Harvard. Cost is $7. Use course code: NPG S34 002 to register.

Spring Wildflowers of McHenry County: Join TLC on a wildflower identification walk. We’ll take you through a high-quality woodland and help you learn a little about each one of these flowers and how to tell them apart. Meet in the parking lot at Ryder’s Woods. Class takes place on Sunday, May 14 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Ryders Woods Park in Woodstock. The cost is $7. Use course code NPG S35 002 to register.
