MCC To Host Free Historic Lecture on "Julia Child: Chef and Spy"

[Monday, March 03, 2014]

McHenry County College (MCC) will host Barry Bradford, national award-winning storyteller, historian and teacher, who will present "Julia Child: Chef and Spy" from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4 in the Luecht Conference Center at MCC.

Bradford will share a unique perspective of Child, who became the first superstar chef on TV in 1963. Her program was so influential that the Smithsonian Institute features her kitchen as a permanent exhibit. Bradford will also present another side to Julia Child—one that the public knew little about. In 1943, during the World War II—20 years before her stardom—Julia Child worked in the OSS, which was to become the CIA. She worked at the right hand of Wild Bill Donovan, the head of America’s foreign spies. With her husband, Child moved from one dangerous post to another, serving our country before she learned how to cook.

The event is the first of two free spring history lectures. The next lecture, "Eisenhower: A Life," will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29.

The lecture series is sponsored by MCC’s Workforce and Community Development Division, Student Life and Multicultural Programs.

The lectures are free and open to the public. Groups are welcome to make seat reservations. The College is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake. For more information, email or call (815) 479-7570.
