MCC TO FEATURE CLASSICAL GUITARIST, MCC PERFORMING GROUPS DURING NOVEMBER CONCERT SERIES

[Monday, November 02, 2009]

The Second Sunday Concert Series at McHenry County College will feature two concerts in November, including classical guitarist Brian Torosian at 3 p.m. November 8 and the MCC Music Department Fall Concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 18.

Torosian is an active soloist and chamber musician on guitar, lute and mandolin. In addition to completing doctoral studies at Northwestern University with Anne Waller, Torosian studied with Oscar Ghiglia at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, where he received honorary diplomas of merit and an honorary scholarship. He has taken numerous master classes with classical guitarists. Torosian serves on the faculty at DePaul University and directs the guitar program of Northeastern Illinois University. In addition to performing on the standard six-string guitar, Torosian also concertizes on replicas of a Baroque guitar, a Terz guitar, and a 10-string guitar.

Some of the pieces he will perform are "Fantasia," and Suite in D Major by Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750); "Kindemarchen" (Children's Fairy Tale) and "Tarantelle" from "Bardenklange," Op. 13, by J.K. Mertz; and "Elegie."

The November 18 concert will feature performances by the MCC Concert Band, MCC Chorus, and the MCC Jazz Ensemble.

The concerts are free and open to the public. The college is located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14, Crystal Lake. A reception will follow each concert. For more information, contact Michael Hillstrom at (815) 479-7814.
