[Thursday, October 22, 2009] Thinking about returning to college? Chase your fears away with McHenry County College's "Getting Started" seminars, which aim to help older students feel at ease about taking college classes after being out of high school for several years or decades. Afternoon or evening "Getting Started" sessions are available, including 12-1:30 p.m. Monday, November 2 and 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 11. Both sessions will meet in Room B168.
"Getting Started" seminars are scheduled throughout the school year and are offered by MCC's adult recruiter Helen Jost. She specializes in helping older students return to college and offers the Getting Started seminars as a way to help students feel more comfortable.
The 1.5-hour seminars give returning adults a chance to meet other students like themselves, learn about degree and certificate requirements, start the financial aid process and tour the MCC campus.
According to Jost, adult students-many of whom have jobs and families-worry about getting back into the swing of attending classes, studying and taking tests. They also worry about feeling conspicuous in a classroom full of younger students.
While not unfounded, those worries are usually put to rest the first day of class, Jost said, noting that getting used to studying again is like riding a bike. She added that MCC also offers free tutoring and academic advising.
Admission is free and refreshments will be served. To register, or for more information, call Jost at (815) 455-8914. For a schedule of upcoming "Getting Started" seminars, visit www.mchenry.edu/returningadults. |
