MCC NAMES NEW STUDENT LEADERS |
|
Tom Kendzie of Crystal Lake was appointed student trustee for the McHenry County College Board of Trustees. He replaces Katie Claypool, who completed a one-year term and graduates in May, earning an associate in science degree. Kendzie is a first-year student working toward an associate in science degree. Kendzie is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, MCC Student Senate, and writes for the Tartan student newspaper. Another slate of officers elected at MCC include the Student Senate executive board, including senate president Tony Guerrero of Fox River Grove; secretary Ivet Esquivel of Harvard; treasurer Esmeralda Carbajal and vice president Luis Diaz, both of Woodstock.

MCC NAMES HIGH SCHOOL ACCOUNTING BOWL 2008 WINNERS |
|
Woodstock High School, Harvard High School and Prairie Ridge High School each took home first place trophies in the McHenry County College sixth annual Accounting Bowl on April 25. The top 160 accounting students from 10 county high schools competed. Results for team trophies include: First Semester Accounting, Prairie Ridge High School, first place; Crystal Lake South, second place; Accounting I, Woodstock High School, first; Crystal Lake South High School, second; and McHenry West High School, third. Accounting II finishers were: Harvard High School, first; Johnsburg High School, second; and Woodstock High School, third.

AWARDS PRESENTED AT PHI THETA KAPPA INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION |

McHenry County College president Walter Packard, along with two students and an instructor, were recently recognized for their leadership and service at the 2008 Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in Philadelphia. Earth Science instructor David Elder received the Distinguished Chapter Advisor Award for the fourth time since 1999. Diane Hanks of Huntley received the Distinguished Chapter Officer Award and Leslie Frailey of Crystal Lake received the Distinguished Member Award, placing both students among the top 25 chapter officers and members out of 1,200 chapters internationally.

MCC TO OFFER GRE, GMAT PREP SESSIONS IN MAY |

Those planning to attend graduate school can prepare for their entrance exams with prep sessions scheduled in May for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Each three-day session costs $250. A three-day prep session for the GRE is scheduled for evenings on May 20, May 22 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 24. A three-day prep session for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) will be held in the evenings on Tuesday, May 13 and Thursday, May 15, plus 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 17.

MCC TO OFFER ELECTRONIC EVIDENCE SEMINAR FOR FIRST RESPONDERS |

McHenry County College Continuing Professional Education Department is offering for the first time "Electronic Evidence Seizure for First Responders." This seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, May 9 at the University Center, 100 S. Main Street, in downtown Crystal Lake. The four-hour program is intended for police officers who are tasked with seizing and securing electronic evidence at a crime scene. The fee for the seminar is $99.

MCC SEEKS EXHIBITORS FOR JOB FAIR |

Area employers are invited to sign up for an exhibit booth at McHenry County College's Annual Job Fair from 2-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3. Sponsored by McHenry County College Career Services, the job fair is expected to attract about 1,500 job seekers with various skill levels and educational degrees, from associate's through master's degrees. Cost to exhibit is $125. Deadline to register is May 28.

The Illinois Small Business Development Center (ISBDC) at McHenry County College is collaborating with Paulsen Productions and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development to host From Service to Success sm from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6 at the Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane, McHenry. This is a free seminar providing information regarding the resources available to assist area veterans and veteran business owners. The event is free of charge, but registration is required.

MCC SEEKS LITERACY VOLUNTEERS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE |

McHenry County College's Office of Adult Education is seeking volunteers to teach reading or English as a Second Language. A literacy tutor receives free basic training to work with literacy students and speaking a second language is not required. Prospective volunteers are asked to observe a literacy class first, and then to attend an orientation session. Call now to make an appointment to observe a class in May and to register for orientation, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15.

MCC TO HOST SESSIONS JAZZ QUARTET MAY 4 |

The Sessions Jazz Quartet will perform at McHenry County College at 3 p.m. on May 4 (first Sunday) in the MCC Conference Center, concluding the college's Second Sunday Concert Series for the year. Selections will include: "Compared to What," by Wes McCann; "Land of Make Believe" by Chuck Mangione; and "That's Life" by K. Gordon and D. Thompson. The concert is free and open to the public.

MCC TO OFFER "SCOTSTARS 2008" YOUTH SPORTS CAMPS |

The McHenry County College Department of Athletics announces ScotStars - 2008, youth baseball, basketball, soccer and softball summer camps. Most camps are for third through ninth graders with the general skills soccer camp also accommodating those going into first and second grade. Participants in these general sports camps will have the opportunity to learn, reinforce and/or improve upon age-appropriate skills, improve self-confidence and ability, have fun, and meet new friends. Camp dates are: boys baseball (June 16-19), boys and girls basketball (June 23-26), boys and girls soccer (July 21-24), boys and girls soccer striker and goalkeeper (July 28-31) and girls softball (July 28-31). The fee for each camp is $69.
