Special Circumstance Information for 2011/12 FAFSA
If the income you reported on your 2011/12 FAFSA will be significantly less in 2011 than in 2010 please see below
Per Federal Regulations, these situations do not allow for financial aid adjustment:
- Voluntarily decreasing work hours to attend college
- Resigning or leaving job voluntarily
- Extensive credit card debt
- Extensive mortgage debt
Situations that may allow for financial aid adjustment:
- Involuntary loss of employment
- Loss of Social Security benefits in 2011
- Loss of Child Support in 2011
- Death of a parent during 2011 (dependent student)
- Death of a spouse during 2011 (independent student)
- Medical expenses paid in 2010 which significantly exceed 11% of 2010 adjusted gross income on your federal income tax
Do not submit forms until June 1, 2011 or later
If you feel your situation warrants an adjustment based on the criteria above, please submit the following:
- STUDENT 2010 Federal and State signed tax forms
- PARENT 2010 Federal and State signed tax forms (if student is under 24 years of age)
- Documentation to back up all figures and dates. If submitting unemployment documentation, you must submit the Benefit Payment History Information Sheet from the unemployment office.
If your paperwork is submitted after January 1, 2012 you will need your 2011 year tax forms.
