Butterflies of McHenry County

Welcome to MCCD's online field guide to McHenry County's butterflies.  For rapid identification purposes the butterflies have been grouped according to their relative sizes and not according to their evolutionary relatedness.

LARGE BUTTERFLIES MEDIUM BUTTERFLIES SMALL BUTTERFLIES
The size of a Monarch or larger. About the size of a Painted Lady. The size of a Sulfur or smaller.
SKIPPERS
Skippers , relatives of butterflies, get their name from their darting flight pattern.  They differ from butterflies in the presence of a pointed extension off the antennal club head.  Many skippers rest with wings held in a jet airplane fashion.
