The Holocaust showcased both the worst and the best in human beings.  This course focuses on moral choice in Nazi Germany, using literature and philosophical readings to examine questions such as:

·      What is evil?  What is goodness?

·      What motivates people to do acts of horrendous evil?

·      How do (and should) victims respond to unjust treatment?

·      What makes regular people perform heroic acts of resistance and rescue?

In Spring 2011 two courses, PHI 251 (Ethics) and ENG 152 (Comp II), will be combined in a learning community format where students and instructors work and learn together so the two courses become one.  The course will be team-taught by Philosophy instructor Jim Gould and English instructor Ted Hazelgrove.  All writing assignments get credit in both classes, and participants satisfy six general education transfer credits.
