English as a Second Language (ESL)
What you need to know about ESL classes at MCC:
Beginning ESL
- Who should attend: adults whose native language is not English and are not a graduate of a U.S. high school.
- Cost: free to eligible students.

- Class locations: MCC campus, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Evening classes are Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. See off-campus class locations. PDF
When you complete Beginning ESL, you'll be able to function in familiar social situations, make inquiries related to everyday activities, express opinions, write simple sentences and read familiar texts in English.

- Class locations: MCC campus, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m., Monday through Thursday from 12:30 to 2 p.m., and Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. See off-campus class locations. PDF
When you complete Intermediate ESL, you may exit the program, continue on to Advanced ESL, enroll in the intensive ESL program, or transition into other college courses as appropriate.
Advanced ESL
- Who should attend: non-native speakers who want to prepare for college-level courses or improve business communication. Pre-registration is required.
- Cost: placement testing will determine eligibility for a fee-based or free class. Review cost for fee-based classes ⇒

- Class location: MCC campus, Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
When you complete Advanced ESL, you will be able to read and write at a level that assures success in college-level English courses.
Advanced Conversation ESL
- Who should attend: students who speak at an intermediate level and want to practice to gain additional vocabulary and confidence in conversational English.
- Cost: $85
- How to enroll: register for this paid non-credit class at MCC's Registration Office, A258 or by calling (815) 455-8588.
- Class location: Advanced Conversation ESL is only offered during spring and fall semesters. View class schedule.PDF
When you complete Advanced Conversation ESL, you will have confidence to participate in detailed conversations in English.
Citizenship Class
The 7-week Citizenship class will help you gain the skills you need to pass the citizenship exam. Help is available for those who need to apply with USCIS. Register for this class during regular ESL registraion hours, no later than Thursday, October 8. Classes are scheduled for Saturdays, October 10 - November 21, 2009 from 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. in A374. Call (815) 455-8752 for more information about the Citizenship class.
