Students interested in taking distance learning courses such as telecourses or online courses often have inquiries about delivery methods, enrollment procedures and instructional expectations. The following frequently asked questions and replies are intended to acquaint students with the Distance Education Program (DE) at McHenry County College (MCC).
What's the difference between "telecourses" and "online courses"?
A telecourse is a self-study approach to learning. A telecourse is comprised of three instructional components: a textbook, study guide and videos. Assignments and telecourse information are usually exchanged via the U.S. mail system or in some cases, via e-mail. You have enrollment flexibility and can usually enroll twice a month, any month, in a telecourse. You have 18 weeks to complete your telecourse. Many students finish before the 18 week timeframe.
Online courses are supported by a computer, modem and access to the Internet. You can access online course materials, your instructor and other online classmates at any time and from any place having Internet access. Online courses exchange instruction and communication systems within our course management system. Online courses have a specific semester start date and ending date.
How do I register for a distance education course?
MCC offers over 20 telecourses and 63 online courses. You register for a distance learning course the same way you would register for a traditional course. Register here.
What is the difference between a "flexible entry telecourse" and a "limited entry telecourse"?
An open entry telecourse means that you can register and begin your telecourse almost any time during the year. Limited entry refers to telecourses that may limit student enrollment and/or be restricted to a particular semester due to faculty availability.
What technology do I need to take an online course?
If you’re using a PC, you need Windows 98/ME/2000XP or higher. If you're using a MAC you need OS 9.x or OS 10.1. You should have an Internet connection and a browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Do I need to attend some kind of orientation?
We strongly recommend that online students register to attend an orientation session. Orientation dates and times are listed in the semester credit schedule and are available here >>
You can register for an orientation session by calling (815) 479-7878 or register now for orientation.
What skills do I need to take an online course?
You should be familiar with word processing functions, e-mail and search engines. You need to be an independent, self-motivated learner. Good time management skills are a prerequisite to distance learning success.
What if I don’t own a computer?
Distance learners who do not own a computer can enroll in a telecourse, which does not require the use of a computer. You can also use one of the two student computer labs on campus or the computers in the library to access online courses.
Where can I find information about DE tuition and fees?
Tuition and fees are available here. Each semester the MCC Credit Course Timetable details important information about telecourse and online course tuition and fees. For additional information about MCC’s Distance Education Program, call (815) 479-7878 or the toll free number (866) 455-3700.
What’s the difference between the terms “asynchronous” and “synchronous”?
In an asynchronous online environment, students can logon and attend “class” anytime and from anywhere. You are still required to finish their weekly assignments on time as required by their instructor.
Synchronously refers to real time instruction whereby students and instructors are engaging in an activity all at the same time. Some instructors use the chat room component in their online course to promote real time interaction.
To learn more terminology, review Distance Education's Frequently Used Terms.
How do I know if the course I’m taking can be applied toward a DE degree or certificate?
Contact the Advising and Transfer Center by phone (815) 479-7565 or e-mail an advisor at advising@mchenry.edu
