Coach Johnson is entering his tenth coaching season at MCC as head baseball coach and his thirteenth season overall as a JUCO head coach. In his previous nine seasons, he has led his MCC teams to an impressive 265-192 record.

During his tenure at MCC, Johnson has coached seven All-Americans and seen 10 of his players sign professional contracts. Over 40 of Johnson’s players have gone on to play baseball at other colleges and universities after MCC. In 2005, Johnson led the Fighting Scots to a 39-21 record and a #18 final NJCAA National Ranking. He was named the Skyway Conference and NJCAA Region IV Coach of the Year in 1996, a year that saw his team finish 40-15, win the Skyway Conference and Region IV Championships and finish the year with a #6 National Ranking.

Some additional highlights from Johnson’s coaching career at MCC include:

In addition to his accomplishments at MCC, Johnson has professional baseball experience. He served as the pitching coach for the Cook County Cheetahs Professional Baseball Club in 2002 and worked as an Associate Scout for the Texas Rangers from 1988-1993.

Johnson started his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Moraine Valley Community College (1988-1989) before becoming an assistant coach at Bellevue University (1989-1992) in Nebraska. He then assumed the head coaching position at John Wood Community College (1992) for one year before his first stint as head coach at MCC. Johnson then served as head coach at Illinois Central College (1996-1998) and NCAA Division I, Western Illinois University (1998-2001) before returning home to again lead the MCC Fighting Scots program.

Johnson has also coached internationally. He served as head coach of the United States Team in the German Open European Cup in 2000 and as an assistant coach for the United States’ 15-year-old national team in Chiba, Japan in 1996. He also served as head coach for the United States and led his team to bronze medals in both the Pacific Ocean Games in Colombia, South America in 1995 and Mexico’s Olympic Festival in 1993.

Johnson, who also serves as a full-time Athletic Recruiter for MCC, received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and social studies from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Father of one daughter, Johnson currently resides in Woodstock, IL with his wife Judy.
