When Mary Miller registered for classes at McHenry County College, she was a single mother of four children and working three jobs to provide for her family. Because of her home, work and school balance, she was only able to take a few courses a semester, but she gave her full effort to succeed in the classroom. Mary was determined to provide a better life for her children. She maintained a 3.0+ GPA and received her associate’s degree in 1999. She then attended Columbia College in Crystal Lake, receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Business Administration, and soon thereafter passed the four-tests series to become a Certified Public Accountant.
After owning her own accounting business, she merged into a local public accounting firm and eventually founded Miller Verchota, Inc. CPAs with her husband in 2000. They have grown the business through hard work, a caring attitude and high ethical standards.
“We take pride in our close attention to detail, which allows us to maintain an excellent relationship with those we serve. Our values remain strong with our quality of service and our respect for our clients,” she said.
Mary is constantly moving forward and looking for new, innovative ways to reach out to her clients and provide them with the services and attention they need. She has also continued her education by obtaining the Certified Valuation Analyst designation from the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts and earning the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants ABV status for Accreditation in Valuation Services. As a result of her efforts, her firm is able to offers a wide range of accounting and tax services. They include the core business support areas of bookkeeping, payroll, software support, individual and business tax preparation, and financial statement preparation as well as more complex areas of auditing, business tax planning, business valuations, litigation support, and estate tax planning and return preparation.
Mary is very heavily involved in volunteering her time to help strengthen McHenry County. She currently serves as the treasurer of the Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers Rotary Club, is past treasurer of the Johnsburg White Lightning Soccer Club, a past board member of the Johnsburg Softball League, a Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce member and McHenry Chamber of Commerce member. She promotes giving throughout the community by volunteering and donating to different not-for-profit organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and NISRA. Mary is an active member of The Illinois CPA Society, AICPA, and The National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts.
In April of 2003, Mary was elected to serve as a McHenry County College Board of Trustee. As a past Chair and current Trustee, she is always giving her time and energy to bettering the college and, more importantly, the community. Mary has come a long way through her life, education and career; she persevered through it all and became a successful business woman while maintaining her devotion to her loving family.
